The kids always enjoy a children's museum, so we try to make it a stop on our vacations. They come in all shapes & sizes. The Pasadena Kidspace Museum is housed in a fairly small building, but they take advantage of the (mostly) mild Cali-weather with lots of outdoor exhibits. The morning we went it was cool & misty, so I was a little worried that there wouldn't be enough to keep us busy for the day when we started out at the indoor exhibits (thank goodness our admission was free with our COSI membership).
However, the kids got right to work with a workshop building houses with different materials a la the Three Little Pigs. This was a fun problem-solving, teamwork activity to start off our day. The kids also enjoyed the indoor climbers, 'working' in the bug cafe and exploring the nature trading room (a program which allows kids to bring natural items like stones or shells to trade for other natural items from the museum's large collection).
The kids couldn't plant seeds because we couldn't pack them for home, so Kyrie read Degen a book. |
After exploring inside, we went outside to visit the greenhouse and then put some physics into action. There were about 10 different stations exploring a variety of physics concepts that the kids really enjoyed (and were similar to activities they had seen at COSI). After we did most of the activities we got some lunch and waited a bit longer for it to warm up and dry out. Thankfully, it did and the rest of the outside activities were open after lunch. The kids really enjoyed the trike-track and exploring the grounds where they found a stream, rock-climbing wall and reading huts. We ended up using all our time, and the kids would have been happy to stay longer if we could.
