Oktoberfest 2015

Though we weren't volunteering at the German School booth this year, we still had a great afternoon at the Columbus Oktoberfest. We ate yummy food, did crafts, watched shows (our favorite shows in the Kinderplatz are the juggler and the Punch & Judy show) and wandered the craft show. This is always an enjoyable event for our family!

Our Oktoberfest princess!

King of Oktoberfest!

Fall at the Conservatory

As we have gotten more into the rhythm of our homeschool schedule, we have been trying to get back to our field trips, which the kids love! There's lots to see and do in the city, and we try our best to fit field trips into our busy schedule. This past week, we made a trip to the Franklin Park Conservatory to catch the last week of their Big Bugs and Blooms & Butterflies exhibits. In between running a few errands, we enjoyed visiting the gardens, especially the outside gardens where we saw lots of mums, bug sculptures and bonsai. We wrapped up our visit by watching a butterfly release. We look forward to returning to the Conservatory in a few months!

Homeschool15: Amazing Animals

Kyrie's unit folder

During this unit, we learned about the amazing diversity of animals that can be found in zoos & habitats around the world, while focusing on the diverse habitat of the rain forest. This unit serves as a nice bridge between our unit on the oceans and the proceeding units which will cover a variety of land-based habitats. Both kids learned about animal adaptations that help them to live in their unique habitats.

Degen continues with his alphabet study.

We also continue to add to his understanding of phonics.

A French activity in which Degen learned about animals and reviewed colors.

Above & below are Degen's draw & writes for this unit.

Kyrie is completing independent reading with follow-up comprehension activities, a continuation of the book studies we started over the summer.

Kyrie's writing project for this unit was an informative paper about the layers of the rain forest.

Kyrie completed a country study about Saudi Arabia & other countries in the Middle East.

Kyrie has enjoyed this math worksheets that allow her to complete a drawing that goes with the math problem.

Each unit, we read & learn about a Bible story. This unit, we continued our series of stories about the Israelites and read about manna & quail. Kyrie completed the above activity as part of our discussion.

Kyrie's unit project was creating a diorama of the rain forest layers.

Of course, Degen wanted to do just what Kyrie did and created his own rain forest diorama.

Homeschool15: Oceans

Kyrie's unit folder

We have started on our series of animal studies, the first of which is our study of the ocean and its inhabitants. This series of studies is enjoyable for the kids who are fascinated by animals and learning about the natural world. These units will take us through the fall.

Kyrie's writing project was an informative paper about octopus.
