Introducing Harriet

At the very end of June, the kids & I came home to a big surprise. Darren was holding a box and inside was a small, dirty kitten missing half her tail. The neighbors found the little thing starving and scared on their front porch and came straight to our house for some help. I wasn't home, so Darren put her in a box and kept her until I got home. I surveyed the damage to her tail, wrapped it and fed her. We named her Harriet, in honor of the life & strength of Harriet Tubman.

The next day, we took her to the vet where she stayed overnight for a tail amputation. She was 5 weeks old and just under 1 pound. The amputation went well, and we brought her back home where the other cats met her with a chilly reception.

It has been more than a month since we adopted Harriet, and she has grown into a feisty girl. She wants attention, but is still just a little bit wild so her first instinct is to run away. Most of the cats have accepted her now, and she is just part of the family. We look forward to watching our pretty girl grow!

Girl Scout Zipline Fun

After a successful Girl Scout Cookie sale, the scouts decided to spend some of their money on a zip-line outing in nearby Hocking Hills. They had a great afternoon on the Dragonfly course, which they navigated independently with big smiles and whoops of delight! It was a great afternoon with a great group of girls!

VBS 2016

Well, summer is just about over, so I guess I had better update the blog (eek!). We had another busy summer. This year, I didn't even attempt to do homeschool units, but let the kids enjoy their day camps and friends and the pool as much as they could. June was our busiest month with two camps and Vacation Bible School.

The theme for VBS this year was the Arctic. I lead Degen's group of rising-first graders. It was another great group of kids who worked hard every day to learn their Bible verses and participate. (Kyrie also attended VBS, but she was in the elementary program, so we didn't get the chance to see her.)

Each VBS the kids bring in money to support a mission cause (this year and last year they raised money for Kenya Kids Can, which helps provide meals for students). They did a great job!
