Et tu, Brute?

We are proud owners of one of the best-est cats in the whole world: Brutus! We adopted Brutus (and Godiva) about 12 years ago from a farm with too many kitties. He was tiny enough to sleep sandwiched between my hands at night (which he did because he wanted to suckle Darren's neck in the middle of the night, so I held him so he wouldn't wake Darren up).  He is still a little guy at about 8 pounds, but he walks around the yard like he is as big as a lion.

He is as brave as a lion, too. When Kyrie was a baby, we would walk the neighborhood with her in a sling to get her to sleep and Brutus would walk the neighborhood with us. Once a man walking a large dog walked past and laughed as he let the leash loosen so the dog could approach him. Well, Brutus went right after that big old dog. A few years later a mean dog would get away from its owner (twice) and come into our yard where the kids were out. Brutus took a flying leap off the porch and went straight for that dog's head. He is very protective of our family!

Before planting our big garden, we heard horror stories about the neighborhood deer laying waste to other gardens. But with Brutus keeping the night watch, we only lost a few heads of cabbage over the couple of days we were gone on a family trip and the cats were inside. We have no proof that he is keeping the deer away, but it seems like quite a coincidence! In the morning's Brutus will come in for some breakfast and a cuddle. He is getting to be an old boy these days. He moves a bit slower and sleeps a bit deeper, but he is still rocking the awesome!

Here is to our Brutus-boy!
