Butterflies!

We are in the middle of our bug unit, and I was very excited that we would be able to meet our friends at the Franklin Park Conservatory to enjoy the Butterflies & Blooms exhibit! After taking a peek at the newly hatched butterflies, we headed into the main exhibit. We were the (practically) the only ones there and the butterflies were very active. The kids LOVED it!

In groups of twos or four, the kids explored the entire garden. They looked at the butterfly pamphlet to try to identify what they saw and held out their arms hoping that a butterfly would land on them.

After looking at the butterfly exhibit, the kids explored the hands-on activities related to the butterfly exhibit and the conservatory. Then we headed out for a picnic lunch before visiting the other gardens. The kids did a great job and really enjoyed each garden setting. Soon enough, we found our way back to the butterflies, though this time a large school group was there, too. We decided to take the kids out to the nearby playground.

After our friends left, I took the kids back inside the conservatory where we did a simple butterfly craft. Then the kids took their butterflies through each of the garden exhibits. By the time we made our way back to the butterflies (again!), we had the garden to ourselves, but the butterflies were not as active in the heat of the afternoon. We found a few lazy butterflies and enjoyed the peace of the garden before we headed home. It was a wonderful day!
