April 1 & 2, 2006

*These are the blog entries I made about Kyrie's birth 5 years ago. I arrived at the hospital on my 28th birthday with the expectations of delivering Kyrie that day. Of course, that girl had a mind of her own even in the womb!

 KYRIE'S BIRTH

We arrived for induction on Saturday, 4/1 at 8:00 a.m.
Nurse Tanja (whom I'd met in Triage a few days prior after a high blood pressure scare) took us back to meet the nurse she handpicked for us, Nurse Nan. She was great, and we settled with lots of talking and joking.
I was dilated to 3 cm and began Pitocin at 9:45. Dr. Gaiser arrived to break my water at 11:15. From there, my contractions began to intensify. It took a few before I was able to get into a relaxed rhythm using my Hypnobirthing training. At one point, I was so deep in concentration that Nurse Nan asked if I was asleep.
I used the birthing ball for much of the afternoon. When labor moved to my back, I soaked it under steaming hot water. By early afternoon I was 5 cm and by 3:30/4:00 I was dilated to 8 cm. Nan set up the room for delivery.
I continued to work through contractions, each time I lost my concentration the pain got bad and Darren talked me back into regaining my focus.
I made no more progress and Nurse Nan introduced us to Nurse Laura who would help us throughout the night. She was absolutely amazing!!
Around 8:00/8:30, I began to lose focus as my fatigue set in- I feared that I'd have no energy to push and my contractions kept coming less than a minute apart. I asked for an epidural which was administered around 9:30/9:45. Then Nurse Laura increased my Pitocin and had me move into new positions to encourage the baby to continue to move down and dilation.
By 10:15, I was dilated to 10 cm and feeling ready to push. Student-nurse Hannah came in to help with the birth. Around 11:00, Laura called Dr. Gaiser who arrived by 11:30. I pushed in several positions until nearly 3:00 a.m. Exhaustion began to set in deeply for both Darren and me until I could barely keep my eyes open between pushing. Dr. Gaiser checked the baby and found that she'd receded, our only solution at this point became Caesarean section. We were prepped, and I was wheeled to the OR.
The sensations of the c-section were beyond what I can describe. Darren was beside me the whole time and saw Kyrie emerge. She gave a short startled cry and was taken to be checked. I told Darren to stay with her- she did not cry again, but looked around intently at everyone and everything quietly.
In recovery, I was able to hold her and she breastfed immediately. We stayed in recovery for an hour, and Billie and Derrel (who had arrived late-late Saturday night from Kansas and stayed in the waiting room throughout) came in to see their newest granddaughter.
Kyrie was taken to the nursery to be checked after Darren and I were taken to our room. We slept just a little and talked about our experience after we awoke. When Kyrie was returned to us, Darren took over Daddy Duties right away as I started my recovery.
I was in the hospital until late Friday evening. The near-week I spent in the hospital is a blur of days. My first problems came with nausea when I tried to get up. We delayed my first trip out of bed until the next day when my catheter was removed. It was a difficult 3 feet to make.
The next problem I had came with pain management; I was quickly ordered to take the maximum dosages of Oxycodone and Motrin on 4 & 6 hour intervals. Fatigue and pain were worsened when I developed a fever. They found I had a UTI and were concerned about other possible infections.
Each day, I could move a bit more on my own and manage my pain with a few less drugs. Kyrie nursed like a pro, and with some help from the lactation consultants we did well together. They also spotted what looked like the start of mastitis. I was put on 2 different antibiotics to help control the infections. The nurses were wonderful!! Derrel and Billie came everyday to help Darren and me- we were so grateful!

Party 'n' Play

We had a great morning celebrating Kyrie's birthday! This was the largest birthday party that we have hosted and seeing so many friends whom we too rarely get to see made us want to throw big bashes way more often! The kids enjoyed swinging, sliding, jumping and shooting hoops before digging into lunch & cake. The time passed too quickly, and soon everyone was helping us get cleaned & packed up as we said goodbye. It was a wonderful party, and I only wish we had a few more hours for the kids to play and the adults to visit. I hope that we'll see all our guests again soon!

So, my super-fun idea for the party was a small candy bar for the kids. The kids filled small take-out containers with their favorite candy right before they went home. It was a big hit!

Tea for Two

On a particularly busy day of housework, Kyrie was being a great big sister and set up a lunchtime tea for Degen & herself. I provided the food, but she did everything else. It was a sweet brother-sister moment!

Fore at Four

Darren found these child-sized golf clubs at a second-hand store. When Darren brought the clubs home, I immediately thought of Papa Derrel who is an avid golfer. Kyrie was immediately interested in the sport. We're going to wait to get her into a golf class, but she wanted Darren to show her a few basics right away. Papa Derrel will have a little golf partner before he knows it!

Cakes En Pointe

Tomorrow we are having Kyrie's birthday party at Recreation Outlet. We decided to have the party early since we will be leaving on our trip to Florida next week. This is the largest party we have ever hosted, but I have been too busy to be stressed about it. Mostly, I am just really excited!
Today I made the birthday cakes. I could have ordered one when I ordered the rest of the food we're going to serve, but I feel like making the kids' birthday cakes is one of my gifts to them. Now, I am all about making things easy and as you may know from past posts that usually means cans of frosting from the store. They taste good enough and will cover a cake, but they are just not what you want if you are really doing some decorating. So, I decided to make my own frosting, which is something I have not done since right after Darren & I were married.
So, I got out my trusty, ol' Wilton handbook with all the notes in the margins and made a batch of buttercream frosting. The only thing I changed was that I did not use shortening because of the trans fats. Instead I used unsalted butter, which since I was coloring the frosting the yellow from the butter didn't matter.
I was reminded of several things during this not-so little exercise:
1) NOTHING beats the taste of homemade frosting. Cans of frosting will do in a pinch, but they just can't get that flavor.
2) Making frosting is messy. Or maybe it's just that I'm messy when I make frosting. I don't have a stand mixer anymore, so I used a handmixer, so maybe it would have been less messy with the former. At times there were tiny bits of butter flying out of the bowl and clouds of powdered sugar. A mess, but worth it!
3) Can frosting is even more horrible for decorating than I had thought. Homemade buttercream has a thicker consistency and is just a dream for piping & decoration. The past few years when I had made cakes, I felt very clumsy with the decorating. But with the right frosting, I realized that it wasn't me. Well, not all me anyway!
Kyrie's birthday party theme is ballerina princess, and I had been planning a ballet slipper cake for months now. As our guest list grew, I knew I would need more than one cake, so after rejecting several other outlandish ideas (with Darren's help) I decided to do just a simple round. I am really pleased with how they both turned out. One has a lemon filling, per Kyrie's request, and the other has a chocolate filling. I also made a few cupakes in case guests would rather not have a filling.
So, here are Kyrie's birthday cakes. One thing I wish I would have done differently is covering the cake board with pink paper. If I would have used a different color I think that the cake would have popped a bit more. But that's such a trivial thing that I won't spend any more time than that one second thinking about it. Oh, and I forgot the edible glitter, which I probably could have put on after the fact, but I was just too tired at that point.

(I always feel like I post too many pictures of my cakes, but I am pretty proud of how they turned out.)

My kids have definitely inherited my sweet tooth. I had to shoo them away from my frosting several times over the course of the afternoon. I promised Kyrie she could have some of the frosting when I was all done. Here she is sucking down some frosting straight from the piping bag... lovely!

But at least she shared with her brother!

Come On, Baby, Light My Fire

With rain gear like this, Degen is looking forward to stormy days this spring! Degen was excited about this rain outfit (a Christmas gift from Nana Billie & Papa Derrel) as soon as he opened it. He literally had to wear the boots as soon as they were out of the box. I thought the whole outfit was just perfect for spring pictures. It is also a loving homage to Degen's great-grandfather, our Pop-pop, who was a volunteer fireman for many years and will turn 80 in just a few weeks (he & Kyrie share a birthday). We love you, Pop-pop!

Degen is working up enough tears to put out a small blaze!

Kyrie at Age 5 (almost)

Kyrie did a super-star job getting her picture taken today! There were lots of cute photos to choose from, and these are some of my favorites!

Degen at Age Two

This boy! Oh my goodness, this boy! I cannot even go into the travails (& the singing) and acrobatic details it took to get these photos! I will just be thankful for the photos we did get!

Look at that little devil smile! He is so stinkin' ornery and it is written all over his face in this picture!

He almost looks ginger-headed in this photo. I remember Kyrie's hair taking on this strawberry-blond hue when she was about this age!
These are the super-cute shoes Degen wore for his photos. They were a birthday gift from Nana MAC.  With a more cooperative child I would have tried to get a better photo of him with the shoes, but this was as good as we could get. I have gotten several comments from strangers about these darling shoes!

Spring Portraits

I took the kids to get their spring/birthday portraits this morning. We did not have a very good day yesterday nor has our week been altogether great, so I was a bit nervous about how the morning would go. It turned out about as I had expected.
Thankfully, I got their sister-brother shot right off because after that getting Degen to do anything for any kind of a picture was like wrangling a baby tiger-monkey. I don't know how we managed to get anything resembling a good picture, but by some sort of miracle we did. While I spent most of my time with Degen coaxing, scolding, bribing, singing and ducking out of the way of the camera, Kyrie did a great job all on her own. Whew! I am thankful that this photo shoot is over!

Hey, Macaroon-a!

There are few better ways to spend a quiet, weekend afternoon than in the kitchen baking! Today, I tried a recipe for Coconut Macaroons. It was crazily easy and very delicious! I can't believe it has taken me so long to use this recipe!
