Degen's 5th Birthday!

Degen's party was about a week and a half before his birthday, so we really spread the fun out this year! Of course, his birthday started with the traditional birthday doughnut! This always brings big smiles! Bless this little boy's heart, but when I asked him what he wanted for his special birthday dinner he replied, "berries and soup." So, I bought a big bowl of berries that barely lasted the day...only a few straggling blueberries remained by bedtime. Overall, this was a quiet day for us. The kids took a bath (Degen loves baths!), they watched some TV and played. That afternoon, they went to gymnastics and tennis per the usual. In the evening, we ate dinner and opened presents and had cake!

The fun part! Degen was very excited to open his presents this year! He oohed and aahed over each card and took paper unwrapping very seriously. When everything was opened, he & Kyrie rushed to the playroom to try out his new toys!

Cake! A little tip for the cake-makers out there is that you often do not need to use a whole box of cake mix, especially if you are using a specialty pan. If you overfill your pan, the cake is more likely to be dome-shaped, which you will have to cut off anyway. If possible, I try to use the leftover batter to make cupcakes or another small cake. Sometimes, the extras get used right away, but if I can I like to tuck a cake away in the freezer just in case. There wasn't a crumb left of Degen's birthday party cake, so I pulled out a little chocolate cake from the freezer that just happened to be perfectly shaped as a football. Yum! We enjoyed a happy day with our great, big 5 year old! Happy birthday, Degen! We love you!
