Homeschool: Food & Nutrition

Some of books for this unit.

This year, our food & nutrition unit is nicely wedged between our farm unit and our Thanksgiving unit. I like that we can make connections between where our food comes from to how it helps our bodies to giving thanks for the good food we have. During this unit we talk about the food groups and making healthy food choices and our digestive system. We also spent time reviewing fractions and money. This is a fun unit with lots of 'hands-on' education that the kids can use & understand right away.

Degen working with a math mat: adding & using ten frames.

Part of Degen's unit folder. He 'made' a pot of soup with just the ingredients he likes. (The ingredients he doesn't like are x-ed outside the pot.)

The kids got to use scratch & sniff stickers to decorate their unit folders.

Some of our games for this unit.

Kyrie working on some dictionary skills.

This was the first unit that Kyrie & I practiced text-mapping. Text-mapping is a process of close-reading which involves looking at the parts of text, identifying unknown terms and recognizing important ideas & details. We used different colored highlighters for each step of the process. Kyrie LOVED this text-mapping activity (in large part because of those 'fancy' highlighters). We are continuing to incorporate this process into our non-fiction reading.

Degen's pizza activity. He used red paint for the sauce and yellow paper strips for cheese.

Degen sorting pizza fractions by size.

Both kids made snack pouches using plastic bags and duct tape. Here is Degen's bag.

Kyrie's writing assignment for this unit was about the five food groups. She used books and articles from Scholastic magazines to find information. Each writing assignment starts with a graphic organizer. Kyrie writes a "guided" draft, a rough draft and receives feedback before typing her final draft.
