Homeschool: Make Believe

Some of our read-aloud books for this unit.

I like that this year this unit got wedged between our Books and Halloween units. The kids had a fun time reading about dragons, princesses, superheroes and other fairy tale/nursery rhyme characters. Degen built castles with blocks and both kids made crowns and painted fairies. We ate elf cookies and sipped soup with princess & star shaped noodles. Degen worked on using visual clues & memory to "read" 5 classic nursery rhymes over the course of this unit. And Kyrie's 'big' project was writing her own fairy tale.

Degen, especially, enjoyed looking at the pop-up books.

Some of our extra activities.

Kyrie's unit folder. The scene is a companion to the story that she wrote.

This was a great kit that Kyrie got for her last birthday. Both kids enjoyed decorating their crowns.

Kyrie worked on writing nursery rhymes this unit. She liked this one best!

Herbstfest (OGLS)

We had a wonderful evening enjoying Room to Run Stables for the Ohio German Language School's Herbstfest (Fall Fest). We and a handful of other families from the school enjoyed visiting the farm for horse rides, tag, a scavenger hunt, a picnic dinner, hay rack ride and bonfire with s'mores.

The kids learning about the horse and its gear in German.

The kids ready for the hay rack ride.

The highlight of the evening was the hay rack ride out to the pasture. When the horses in the field saw the tractor coming, they came running for their evening meal. It was amazing to be surrounded by all these gorgeous creatures who nipped at our hay bale seats. Kids and adults alike oohed and aahed at their beauty.

Kyrie in horse heaven!

Me with this sweet donkey. Turns out donkeys are great coyote fighters, which is a benefit to the farm.

A fun evening was had by all, and we are very appreciative to our OGLS teachers and the owners of Room to Run Stables for arranging this experience!

The kids got to visit this mama pig!

Giraffes!

A beautiful fall day had us heading to the zoo for our monthly zoo school session. The zoo's new Heart of Africa section was a hot ticket over the summer, so we didn't spend a lot of time there or get the chance to feed the giraffes. Since the exhibit is closing at the start of November for the winter, I decided that we had better take the opportunity to see the animals again and feed the giraffes for the first time. Unfortunately, some of the local school districts had the day off and there were lots of people at the zoo enjoying the nice afternoon. We waited about 30 minutes for our turn to feed the giraffes, which the kids loved. I wish I had gotten a few better pictures, but I was juggling the camera while doling out single pieces of lettuce to the kids to feed the giraffe. These are the best I got.

Afterward, we wandered through the rest of "Africa," which I think is one of the best animal exhibits I have seen at any zoo because it is basically a huge open space where different animals can roam about. And even though the lions are in a separate "pen" it cleverly looks like they could race across the savanna and nab a zebra if they wanted.

As we made our way towards the zoo school classroom, we stopped to see some animal exhibits. The highlight was definitely the beavers who are tucked back in a corner of the North America section of the zoo. They were a lot of fun to watch as they raced around their pool and dove underwater. They were like chunky otters, and since I saw a "Nature" episode on how important (and under-appreciated) these guys are to the North American eco-system, I have a soft spot in my heart for them for not just protecting wetlands, but actually building wetlands.

I didn't get any pics from zoo school, but the kids learned about fossils. This was Degen's second zoo school class, and he did a great job paying attention and even raising his hand to answer questions. They got to pet a tortoise and make their own 'fossils.'

Chicago: Robot City

Our kiddos are lucky to have a super-cool godmother/aunt & uncle who scheduled them for a robot workshop at the very fun Robot City! The kids got to choose a robot to build together with help from a robot tech. They learned the basic parts of a machine and how to build circuits before building their robot. And everyone knows that no robot workshop is complete without a trip for fro-yo afterward! Thank you, Aunt Jess & Uncle Jack! We love you!

Me and my bestie! Love her!

Cobles in Chicago

We spent a fabulous long-weekend in Chicago visiting my best friend & her husband. We enjoyed our taste of city living with rides on public transportation and visits to the park, the zoo & the botanical gardens, and lots of super-yummy food! We had beautiful weather and lots of time to talk and joke and catch up with the Kerwins while enjoying the city.

We spent a sunny afternoon at the Lincoln Park Zoo.

After the zoo, we walked through the botanical gardens.

The kids having fun with ol' Will Shakespeare.

Kerwins & Cobles together!

We explored the beautiful Graceland Cemetery. This cemetery is large and filled with some amazing mausoleums and monuments.
